How to count wedding flower stems across recipes

Multiply each arrangement recipe by its quantity, then combine the same flower variety across the entire event before adding reserve or ordering bunches.

Count arrangements before guests

A guest count cannot describe the flowers in a bouquet, a vase or an installation. List the arrangements you will actually make. A table with four small vases needs four vase recipes, or one explicitly combined table recipe. Calling both of these a single vase makes an order four times too small.

Build a trial arrangement in the intended vessel, count the stems and record its proportions. Stem length, flower size and foliage affect arrangement proportions, as Iowa State Extension explains. The worksheet handles the arithmetic; a trial tests the design.

A bouquet and twelve table vases

The sample wedding has one bridal bouquet and twelve table vases. Each uses the same blush rose, white ranunculus and eucalyptus varieties.

VarietyBridal bouquet x 1Table vase x 12Recipe total
Rose - blush12 x 1 = 125 x 12 = 6072
Ranunculus - white8 x 1 = 83 x 12 = 3644
Eucalyptus6 x 1 = 64 x 12 = 4854

The event needs 170 recipe stems before contingency. These are three shared variety totals, not six separate shopping lines. Combine first so every rose used by a bouquet and vase draws from the same purchase.

Decide what counts as the same variety

Keep blush roses and white roses separate when colour matters. Separate a short spray rose from a long-stem single-head rose, even if both are sold as roses. Naming two rows identically does not merge them in StemOrder: each shared variety has its own identity, and recipes select that row.

For a substitution, add a distinct variety and change the affected recipe selections and stem counts. A hydrangea head does not automatically replace one rose. Test the new recipe, confirm the grade and stem length, and enter the replacement supplier packs. The tool does not judge visual or biological equivalence.

Check the finished count

In the worksheet, add varieties in Stock & supplier packs, add each arrangement and set its quantity, then select its recipe flowers. The Recipe total column shows each multiplication. Review it before applying contingency and stock. A zero arrangement quantity intentionally removes that recipe's demand while retaining it for later editing.

Count physical stems consistently. A branching stem with several blooms is still one purchased stem. If your recipe counts individual flower heads or foliage sprigs, convert it to the supplier's purchasable stem unit before using the calculator.
